Specialists in Extensions & Conversions in Thatcham

In order to create more space in your home, you can either – extend outwards or convert an existing room for a new function. Both are great options, but it depends on the property. At Oakley, we design and build bespoke home improvements as well as offering garage conversions.

Many people choose a traditional extension to add to their home, with windows and a tiled roof. However, modern-day conservatories and orangeries are an even better alternative – offering plenty of additional space. At Oakley, we offer all these options, and you can even customise your extension with bi-folding doors, roof lights and a range of door and window finishes. Conservatories and Orangeries can be built to meet high energy performance, meaning they can be used to create open-plan rooms, which are ideal for kitchen extensions.

If you want to make the most of your home without having to wait for planning permission approval or structural changes, a quick conversion is the ideal solution. You don’t have to spend a fortune on new brickwork – Oakley Green Conservatories can enhance your existing living space with a stylish new conversion of a garage or other ‘dead space’ within the existing walls of your house.

Frequently Asked Questions

How big can an extension be without planning permission?

As of 2019, the maximum projection of a Conservatory sited on a detached house is 8 metres from the building line and 6 metres in the case of a semi-detached or terraced property. If you want to avoid applying for planning permission, the extension must not cover over half of the land surrounding the house, or exceed the highest part of the existing roof. Our surveyor will confirm with you if planning permission or other building regulations are required and if so, we will apply for these for you.

Kitchen extension or conservatory kitchen?

When planning a kitchen extension, you have two principal options – adding a traditional brick and mortar extension, or incorporating a new kitchen within a conservatory or orangery. The kitchen is the heart of the home and the room we spend the most time in, so the key principle is to create the perfect open-plan space. Your kitchen extension can be configured in any way you choose but one thing is certain – it will be a pleasant environment for you and your family to enjoy.

How long does a kitchen extension take?

The amount of time it takes to complete a kitchen extension depends partially on the design and materials you choose for your build. For a standard kitchen extension, you should expect the end-to-end process to take up to 3-4 months.

Is it worth extending my house?

A house extension is an investment which will not only grant you more space to enjoy in your home, but will also increase its value in the long run. Having an additional reception room is very likely to up the value of your property when it comes to selling later down the line.

Do I need an architect for an extension?

You’re not legally obliged to hire an architect to build an extension – you can ask your builder or contractor to carry out the design for you. Oakley Green has expert craftspeople that will carry out every aspect of your build, from surveying to architect drawings, design, manufacture and after sales care.
